Fees: per-pool swap fee (commonly 0.05%–1%)

Uniswap fits anyone needing reliable, deeply liquid on-chain swaps and a reference-grade AMM. The main caveat is weak token value accrual and the impermanent-loss burden LPs carry. This is not financial advice.

What Uniswap Is

Uniswap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that lets anyone swap tokens directly from their own wallet without an intermediary, using an automated market maker (AMM) model instead of an order book. Launched in 2018, it replaced traditional buyers and sellers with liquidity pools that price trades algorithmically, and it has since become the reference implementation that much of the ecosystem builds on. Its later v3 introduced concentrated liquidity, letting providers focus capital in specific price ranges. Governance runs through the UNI token.

A Reference-Grade DEX

On the metrics that define a swap venue, Uniswap is close to best-in-class: 9 for security and audits, 9.5 for adoption and TVL, 9.5 for track record, and 9 for transparency. Its core contracts have an exceptional multi-year record with no protocol-level failure, and both v2 and v3 are so widely integrated that aggregators, wallets, and other protocols route through them by default. It is fully permissionless and open-source, deployed across many chains, with active governance and deep liquidity in major pairs.

Swap Fees and LP Economics

Trading costs are set per pool rather than by a single house rate, commonly ranging from roughly 0.05% to 1% depending on the pair's volatility, with that fee going to the pool's liquidity providers. For traders this is straightforward, but for liquidity providers the economics are more demanding. In concentrated-liquidity v3, capital only earns fees while price stays within the chosen range, so providers must weigh fees against impermanent loss and, often, active management.

The UNI Token Question

This is where the score dips, with tokenomics and value at 6.5. UNI grants governance rights, but the protocol has historically operated without a live fee switch, so trading revenue has not accrued to token holders the way fees flow to liquidity providers. There is also an off-chain trust layer to keep in mind: the raw contracts are permissionless, but the front-end and routing tools most people use add a layer beyond the base protocol.

Best Suited For

Uniswap fits anyone who needs reliable, deeply liquid on-chain swaps and a proven AMM, whether trading directly or building on top of it. The main things to weigh are the limited value accrual to UNI holders and the impermanent-loss burden that liquidity providers carry, especially in v3. This is not financial advice; providing liquidity in particular requires understanding how impermanent loss works before committing funds.

Overall 8.8 / 10 — the weighted average of the criteria above. How we score →

Strengths
  • + Dominant, deeply liquid DEX with an exceptional multi-year security record on core contracts
  • + Battle-tested v2 and concentrated-liquidity v3 used across the whole ecosystem
  • + Fully permissionless, open-source, and widely integrated by aggregators and wallets
  • + Large, active governance and broad multi-chain deployment
Watch-outs
  • UNI token has historically lacked a fee switch, so value accrual to holders is limited
  • Concentrated liquidity (v3) exposes LPs to impermanent loss and active management
  • Front-end and routing layers add off-chain trust versus the raw contracts
Frequently asked questions

Is Uniswap safe?

+

Uniswap's core v2 and v3 contracts have an exceptional multi-year security record and are heavily audited and battle-tested, which is why we rate its security a 9. The larger caveats are the off-chain front-end and routing layers and, for liquidity providers, impermanent loss rather than contract risk. This is not financial advice.

What are Uniswap's fees?

+

Fees are charged per pool and paid to that pool's liquidity providers, commonly between about 0.05% and 1% depending on the pair. The protocol itself has historically not taken a cut through a fee switch, so token holders have not received swap revenue.

How do you use Uniswap?

+

You connect a self-custody wallet, pick the tokens you want to swap, and confirm the trade on-chain; the AMM prices it from the relevant liquidity pool. You can also provide liquidity to earn fees, but in v3 that means choosing a price range and accepting impermanent-loss risk.

Is UNI a good investment?

+

We don't give investment advice. From a protocol standpoint we score Uniswap's tokenomics only 6.5 because UNI has historically lacked a fee switch, limiting how much value accrues to holders even though the exchange itself is dominant and heavily used.

Is Uniswap a good DeFi protocol?

+

Yes by our scoring, at 8.8 overall, driven by its liquidity, security, and track record as the reference DEX in the defi-protocols category. The weak spot is token value accrual rather than the exchange's reliability.
